Jean was born in 1928, the daughter of Edward McNamara and Mary Ellen (Minnie) Murphy. She died in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 2012.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend, Jean Jewers at home, on Thursday, January 5, 2012 surrounded by family. Born in Lower River Inhabitants, Jean was the daughter of the late Mary Ellen (Murphy) and Edward R. McNamara. Jean’s spirit and unconditional love of her family and close friends knew no bounds. She was employed for many years at Cameron’s Jewelers and was owner/manager of Jean’s Gifts and Engraving as well as "Fashion Hut". A member of St. Ninian’s Parish, a strong woman, Jean was unwavering in her faith and this gave her strength until the very end. She enjoyed her garden and took pleasure in all of nature. Jean is survived by her 10 children, Sons, Gerald (Mary) Jewers - Dartmouth, Richard (Pam) Jewers - Calgary, Daughters, Sharon McDonald (Charles Scott)- Florida, Deborah Sullivan (Jerome) - Antigonish; Elizabeth Shumway (Elwin) -Geneva, New York; Carolyn Novak (Alexander)- Antigonish; Alice Stewart (Tom) - MacLellan’s Brook; Barbara MacDonald (Daniel)- Dartmouth, Brenda Manzer (Robert) - Spruce Grove, Alberta; Cheryl Oostvogals (Joe)- Antigonish. She is also survived by 26 Grandchildren and 25 Great -Grandchildren a sister Kathleen (Lester) Proctor and a sister in law Melinda McNamara-Whiteside. Jean was pre-deceased by her husband Harold, Sister Gertrude McCarthy; Brothers Leonard, Arthur, Edwin and Terrance McNamara, sisters, Eileen and Alice in infancy, Sister- in- law Joan McNamara, son-in-laws Joe Strong and Vince Burke and grandson Matthew Novak. Special thanks to the St. Martha’s Palliative Care, Oncology staff, VON nurses, Dr. Cooper and Dr. Sturmy.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Visitation will be Sunday, January 8, 2012 from 7:00-9:00 PM; Monday, January 9, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00- 9:00 PM. A funeral mass to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM in St. Ninian’s Cathedral.
Funeral services for the late Anna Jean Jewers, Antigonish, were held January 10 in St. Ninian Cathedral with Father Lazuras Guria officiating, assisted by Father Peter Baccardax.
Mrs. Jewers died January 5, 2012, at home.
Readers at the funeral Mass were Stephen Novak, Amanda Novak and Derek Strong. Mrs. Jewers’ grandchildren presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by St.FX music students, Carolyn Curry, Elizabeth Curry, Alison Smiley, Matt MacDougall and Matt Michielin.
Pallbearers were sons-in-law Jerome Sullivan, Alexander Novak, Tom Stewart, Daniel MacDonald, Rob Manzer and Joe Oostvogels.
