James McMillan was born on February 4, 1898 in Glasgow, the youngest son of Hugh McMillan and Elizabeth Leonard.[1] He was named after an older brother called James who died on February 13, 1898.
James was baptised at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Glasgow on March 1, 1898.[2]
James lost his parents at a young age, with his father Hugh dying in a poorhouse when James was four years old, and his mother Elizabeth committing suicide when he was twelve.
He lived with his older sister Annie and her husband Peter Dastey,[3] and was informally known as "Jimmy Dastey".[4]
He worked many jobs in his life, including being a painter/decorator, butcher's apprentice, and an electrical engineer.[4]
He married Matilda McIlroy on March 15, 1922 in Glasgow.[5] They had five children; James, Nathaniel, Hugh, Margaret and Yolanda.
James died at the age of 59 of lung cancer at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride on February 25, 1957.[6]
