Biography

Jane was born about 1793-5, the exact date unknown. She married John Lockhart on 12 August 1816 at Lesmahagow. The marriage record shows her name as "Jean McMillan" but all other known records say "Jane McMillan". Jane and Jean were often pronounced alike in Scotland and the spelling varied.

In 1821, she emigrated to Canada with her husband and their 3 daughters. They sailed from Greenock on 2 May 1821, aboard the ship "Earl of Buckinghamshire", arrived at Québec on 16 June 1821, then made their way through the lakes and rivers to Ramsay Township, near present-day Ottawa, where they settled. Additional children were born there. Jane passed away in 1837 and was buried at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, Ontario. A photo of her tombstone is attached. ^[1]
