Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. I don't know much about my family tree yet.
The dream is to trace the 'family' as far back as one could go - every branch, every surname. Names are a great start, but I would love to learn more about who each person was in the world - how they came to be where they were and who they were and how that all eventually led here to this moment. Also, I would love to connect with 'family', no matter how far reaching the connection. I've seen some people have even published their family's history - I would love to find something like that if it is already in existence, and if it isn't, collaborate to create one.

Roben-Peta, I appreciate your "Thanks". I think you'll find this place to be great for discovering family connections.

I don't know if you are familiar with Family Search, but someone has done extensive research on your family at that site. There you will find a profile for your grandfather's father Johannes Petrus Nortje (1891-1974). Johannes' father was a man by the same name, Johannes Petrus Nortje (1841-1932). You'll find that there is a WikiTree profile for that man already exists: Nortje-840.

Connecting your family to that profile will be your first link to the "global family tree". That's where the fun of WikiTree begins!

Enjoy the journey.

Hi Ben

Ooh, thanks so much for the tip, that is indeed very exciting and I will definitley go check that out asap!

I also found some info. on Ancestry for the other side of my family and downloaded the gedcom file, but I must be honest, the merging of the two or comparing of the data on Wiki is still throwing me for a loop. I've just started all this about a week or two ago, so making progress rather slowly, but I'm learning every day and I must say a big thank you to you and all the helpful 'geneology' people. This is a crazy 'hobby' that gets very confusing and overwhelming, so it's always a treat to have some support. :P

Have an awesome day!

Hi Roben-Peta,

Welcome to WikiTree and thank you for signing the Honor Code, it is appreciated.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Hi Janet

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. This is very exciting, even if rather daunting at this point as yes, I am BRAND new to all this! For now I've just been playing around on all the different tabs to see what they do and how they work and I'm slowly making progress.

I did go to the G2G forum but still need to figure out how to work it properly, or rather, how best to ask my question and under which category. For instance, what 'geneology help' are we able to ask for and what are 'project volunteers'?

I also downloaded a gedcom file from Ancestry and when I went to the gedcompare section, I found that I am getting a little confused by certain things, but it's a bit complicated to explain. I guess I will get there eventually. :)

Thanks again!

Kind regards
