  • First-hand information. Entered by Donald McLaughlin at registration.

I am related to the Moorman family through my mother. The Moorman's were Quakers. I have family records reaching back to the Isle of Wight. My line settled in Virginia in 1670 Capt. Zachariah (1620- Isle of Wight) and later moved to Campbell County, VA, Greene and Highland Counties, OH, Warren County, IA and Reno County, Kansas. Though early slave holders, my ancestors divested themselves of slaves prior to the Revolutionary War. Future generations followed their Quaker roots and in some cases, became active abolitionists including being conductors on the Underground Railroad while there son was serving in the Civil War as a flag bearer.

I am trying to correct dates, names and events that have been forgotten or recorded inaccurately.

Hi, Donald

In reply to your message, you just created your profile as a Guest.  This page explains the levels: Membership information.  To add your family, you can upgrade, and that page tells you what you can do at each level.  As a Guest, you can add your profile only and can leave comments, but you cannot edit or create other profiles.

At the top of this page, you see SURNAME entered.  Click the magnifying glass, and you get a list of all SURNAME profiles on WikITree, and you can sort alphabetically or by birth or death dates to see if family members are already on WikiTree.  You can repeat this for each surname you are researching or add a first name to see all the profiles on WikITree.

The name you are looking for could be entered and see if they are on WikITree, a 100% free one-world tree, with one profile per person entered by members. You connect to your parents, who connect to their parents, and then connect your branch to the one-world tree. When I entered my 4x great-grandmother, I connected to Robert de Brus, the 1st King of Scotland.

You could download a gedcom from a site or program you have entered your family and upload it to WikiTree for the GEDCOMpare process.  This page lists gedcom links for more information: Gedcom Topics.

You mentioned you were starting your branch from scratch.  You might want to set up a free account on FamilySearch.org and research to see if your ancestor is there.  The FamilySearch records are outstanding and sometimes attached to the person on their FamilySearch profile, which can list parents, spouses, and children to help you get started.

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Take care  ~ Sheryl
