Let me be explicitly clear, this is causing real, tangible harm. That is why I just joined this site. People are tying these to their GEDmatch and other DNA profiles and it is causing adoptees to be misdirected to incorrect family lines, and also is impeding a major DNA project involving several families affected by slavery in New Brunswick who wish to know their roots beyond their great grandparents. This also has the potential to throw off law enforcement as some of those profiles on GEDmatch are enabled for them. This site is not user friendly at all and they have not provided a simple way to provide these details. I have several kits in my possession directly, and there are dozens of DNA relatives with correct, properly sourced trees all over. This misinformation is harmful for many reasons and it does need to be rectified. It is not inflammatory to point that out. The records provided aren't even tied to the correct people. Many cousins born with same names. Why would Thomas Joseph McLaughlin THE THIRD belong to Laughlin McLaughlin? By this standard, none of these people should have ever been linked. Please fix this is you can, it is important. I am done with this site because it doesn't appear to function properly with my browser and when I try to add in sources it just gives error messages. If this comment stops one person from adding in the wrong parents, then it's worth it.

I emailed you directly, to offer some assistance on the topic of sources. I agree that it is a problem if this is "impeding a major DNA project involving several families affected by slavery in New Brunswick who wish to know their roots beyond their great grandparents. This also has the potential to throw off law enforcement as some of those profiles on GEDmatch are enabled for them." This is why we're all motivated to make the best tree possible.

It is true that WikiTree takes a little while to learn. I don't completely agree "This site is not user friendly at all and they have not provided a simple way to provide these details." It is straightforward to add sources by just copy-pasting them into the biography. And there are a lot of resources you can use to learn how to do more complicated formatting, or to add DNA info correctly. The Canada project has a number of members that are willing to help you learn.

It's great that you "have several kits in my possession directly, and there are dozens of DNA relatives with correct, properly sourced trees all over." It sounds like it will be easy to correct the tree, with good sources!

Hello, I am the 4x great granddaughter of Thomas Joseph McLaughlin III. You have him attributed to wildly incorrect parents. I have substantial DNA proof that he is the child of Thomas Joseph McLaughlin II born April 12, 1770 and Nancy Agnes McLaughlin (they were cousins) born 1809. Please REMOVE any of parental connections you have linked above this, as it's extraordinarily inaccurate. I have this line DNA confirmed back 2 more generations to Thomas Joseph McLaughlin Sr. born 1740.

Hi Eleanor! it's great that you want to contribute to the accuracy of our shared tree. Because it is a shared tree, however, we use sources and evidence when editing profiles. This means a couple of things.

I'd also note that you have signed the WikiTree honor code https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Honor_Code . Remember that 1. we collaborate, and 3. we assume that mistakes are unintentional. It's probably best to avoid what might be interpreted as all-caps demands, and potentially inflammatory phrases like "wildly incorrect" and "extraordinarily inaccurate".
