Biography

William was born in 1851. He emigrated to New Zealand about 1860.

He married Miriam Smith in 1875.^[1] The children of William and Miriam were:

He passed away in 1914.^[3][4]

The death occurred this morning at his residence in Masterton of Mr William Frederick McLaren, a very old and highly respected settler. The deceased had been ill for a considerable time, and his demise was not unexpected. The late Mr McLaren was born at Bray, Wicklow, Ireland, on August 11th, 1851 and came to New Zealand with his parents when he was nine years of age. Many years ago he took up the Bush Gully property near Martinborough, and actively followed farming pursuits for a long period. He came to Masterton a few years ago, and has resided here ever since. Besides a widow seven sons (Messrs Donald, Stanley, Colin, Neil, Eric, Kaye, and Erle McLaren) and one daughter (Mrs Donald McKenzie, of Masterton) are left to mourn their loss.^[5]

William's will leaves legacies to his sisters: Catherine Smith, the wife of Moses Smith of Gladstone and Mary Ann Bowles, wife of George Bowles of Carterton.
