Biography

James McLaren was born on 16 July 1884 in Limehouse/Stepney in East London. He was baptised at St Thomas, Stepney (Church of England) on 14 September 1884 (the date 16 July 1884 is written in the margin of the baptismal entry, and I have presumed this to be his date of birth).

In the 1891 Census, James is living in the household of Ada McLarin (sic)

In the 1901 Census, James is living at 5 Queens Road, Erith, Kent. His father John Bell McLaren, now 47 years old, is the head of the household, with his wife Ada, 5 children, and a boarder called David Davies (a bank cashier from Newcastle). James, age 16, is an apprentice pupil teacher.

On 26 June 1907, James married Rose Carter in the parish church of St John the Baptist, Erith, Kent. James was aged 22 and working as a clerk. His address is given as 1 Gordon Road, Erith. Rose was aged 25, living at Tescombe Villa, Mill Road, Northumberland Heath. The witnesses are ?, Jessie Gausden and Kate Drayton.

In the 1911 Census he is living at 25 Mill Road, Belvedere, Erith, Kent. He is married to Rose, and the head of the household. Rose's parents (William and Jane Carter) are also living with them. Minnie Gausden, a boarder, is also living with them. James is working as a Wages Clerk for an Electric Cable Manufacturer.

On 27 March 1921, James, now a 36 year old widower, remarried. His second wife was Elizabeth Gertrude Wootton, a spinster aged 23. They were married in Christ Church, Erith, Kent. James was a clerk, and living at 1 Wheatly Terrace, Erith. Elizabeth was living at 42 Thanet Road. The marriage was witnessed by Robert A Wootton (the bride's father) and Ada McLaren (presumably the bride's mother).

On 5 May 1923, James and Elizabeth welcomed the birth of their first child, John Robert McLaren.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register, the family is living at 161 Barnsole Road, Gillingham, Kent. James is initially described as a "costing clerk", but there is the addition of "Wages, Stores and" above the entry, with "Gillingham Corp." added afterwards. The final column contains the entry "ARP 1st Aid" - a sign of things to come.
