John was born about 1817.[1]
On 5 Sep 1853 at Burntisland, Fife, Scotland, John married Georgina Christie. [2]
He came to New Zealand at age 44 with his family on the Assisted Immigration ship Chrysolite, arrived Lyttelton 24 Nov 1862. [3]
The passenger log says "Antrim" as the source so possibly that means one or both of the parents were originally from Antrim (Ireland) before moving to Scotland? Or perhaps a mistake.
His first wife was Jane Through/Throughe, and they had four children John, Jane, Robert, William. (These appear on the passenger log). Then with Georgina the children were Joseph, Elizabeth, James, Georgina and David. The "Mary Jane McIlroy" headstone at Timaru is the wife of son John.
Death record "1892/94 McIlroy John 77Y" is the only one with matching date. Springston Cemetery, Selwyn. I couldn't find any records to corroborate this is the right John McIlroy though.
