James McIlhaney was born circa 1749 in Fairfax County, Virginia.[1] He was the son of John McIlhaney and Rosannah Stuart. In 1757, the area was redistricted, and the family plantation home was then located in the newly formed county of Loudoun.
James McIlhaney, or McIlhany as he is more commonly known, became a land baron in the area surrounding Leesburg, Virginia. He accumulated roughly 9000 acres in his plantation called Ithaca during his lifetime.[2]
James McIlhany was a Captain with the 5th Virginia Regiment during the American Revolutionary War.[3] He is an approved DAR patriot, ancestor number A077179.[4]
James McIlhany died in 1804.[5] He is buried on what was once his family plantation Ithaca, where there are a small number of deteriorating ancient gravestones remaining. This is on private land and inaccessible to the public. There is currently an effort by the Sons of the American Revolution to place a Revolutionary War grave marker on the site.

My name is Gary Dunaway, and I am a member of the Williamsburg, VA Sons of the American Revolution chapter.
We have been researching Captain William Harwar Parker (1759-1815) and Captain James McIlhany (1749-1804). We recently located their graves in a McIlhany family cemetery north of Hillsboro in Loudoun County. We have begun the approval process for eventually holding an SAR grave marking ceremony at the site.
I am trying to contact his direct descendants to make them aware and keep them apprised of our progress. I would appreciate any assistance you could offer.
You can email me at [email address removed] Regards and thanks,
Gary Dunaway
