Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Ulric McGee is a part of US Black heritage.

William Ulric "Ulric" McGee was born on the 5th May 1897, in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas, United States, the 5th known child, third son of William McGee and Mary Washington. [1]

On the 7th June 1900, 3-year-old William, going by his other forename, Ulric, was living with his family at 301 Sweeney Street, Hillsboro, Texas. Home at the time were his parents: William (35), a Railroad Section Foreman, and Mary (30); his siblings: 14-year-old John, 11-year-old Barnett, 10-year-old Fordy, 6-year-old Ethel, the baby of the family: 2-year-old Octavia; a maternal aunt: 26-year-old Emma Bonner and her husband: Tennessee-born Shepherd Bonner (28), a Porter-Saloon (presumably with the Railroad); and a 40-year-old Texas-born boarder, Adam W Green, a Railroad laborer.[2]

The 20th April 1910 saw the family still in Hillsboro, but now living at 213 Third Street. Those at home were 12-year-old Ulric; his parents: Will (44), still a Railroad Section Foreman, and Mary (40); and his siblings: 19-year-old Fordy, now manager of a restaurant, 15-year-old Ethel, 11-year-old Octavia; 9-year-old Vivian, 7-year-old Winfield, 3-year-old Alfonso, and the newest baby: 2-month-old Henry Wadsworth.[3]

When he registered for the draft on the 5th June 1916, Ulric was living at 1306 Michigan Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri; and described himself as tall, and slender, with brown eyes, and black hair. He was working for Matlock Barber Shop, and named his next of kin as Ruth McGee, of the same address. The relationship of Ruth to Ulric is not stated.[4]

On the 16th February 1942, William was living in Chicago, Illinois, and described himself as being 5ft 11 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, of light brown complexion, and with brown eyes and hair. He names his next of kin as Thelma McGee, but what the relationship was is unknown.[1]

William Ulrich McGee and Virginia Rose Abner were married on the 17th December 1942, in Cook County, Illinois, United States.[5]
They were to have three known children – a son, named William Ulric for his father, who lived a bare 5 minutes after his birth;[6] and two daughters: Cheryl, and Sheila. Sometime after the births of the children, the marriage broke down, ending in divorce.

William Ulric "Ulric" McGee passed away on the 8th August 1971, in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan, United States, aged 74 years.[7] [8] He was listed as divorced, and a Garage Owner of Center Street, Bangor. His father is given as William McGee, and his mother as Mary Washington. His place of birth is incorrectly given as Missouri, not Texas, perhaps because he had resided in Missouri for some while.

Ulric was buried on the 10th August, in Monks Cemetery, Bangor, Michigan, near where his infant son had been laid to rest 27 years earlier.[9] [10]
