In the 1901 census James (age 3) was the son of John McEwan at 9 Craig Pl Main St, Bothwell, Lanarkshire.^[2]

He married Jeanie Harper on 18 July 1919 at The Masonic Hall, Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was an iron work labourer living at 19 Craig Place, Bellshill, Lanarkshire.^[3]

He migrated to Totonto, York, Ontario, Canada from Scotland arriving on 16 July 1923 at Quebec on board the vessel 'Cassandra'. He was a miner.^[4]

He died on 15 April 1947 at 18 Van Horne Street, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, age 49 years. He was a machinist foreman living at 504 Northcliffe Boulevard, Toronto. James was buried on 18 April 1947 in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto.^[5]
