Biography

John (McDowell) MacDowall XIIth of Garthland is a member of Clan MacDowall.

John (McDowell) MacDowall XIIth of Garthland was born in Scotland.

John McDowell was born about 1575 in Galloway, Scotland.

He married Janet, daughter of John Gordon of Lochinvar, on 15 May 1596.[1][2]

He married secondly, Margaret, daughter of Andrew Kerr. They had issue and she survived him.[3] contract 2 and 5 Mar 1614.[4]

John was still living on 5 Mar 1614[4] but was dead by 1648.[3]

Paternal relationship is confirmed with a MyHeritage triangulated test match on chromosome 1 for 14.3 cM between TAL, NWR, and Thom Anderson;TAL/NWR: 14c1r; Thom Anderson/NWR: 10c; Thom Anderson/TAL: 9c3r

Research Notes

  • Like his father, John was a political exile. He went to Glenoe near Larne, Raloo Parish, County Antrim by 1595 where he married Mary Wylie. Genealogist Mary Semple described him as "the 7th son of Uchtred MacDowall, 10th of Garthland." He fled to Ireland as a Covenantor, one bound to defend Protestantism in Scotland. John passed away in 1635 in Glenoe.

John is the 12th of Garthland, not the 11th, and his parents are Uchtred the 11th (d. June 11, 1600) and Eupham Dunbar. John's grandparents (not parents as shown here) are Uchtred the 10th and Margaret Kennedy (The Peerage).

If this is corrected, the estimated (unsourced) birthdates in this line will need to be adjusted.
