Hugh (37) married Agnes Roleston Bayne (25) (born on June 25, 1889 in Cookstown, County Down, Ireland; daughter of John Bayne) in 1915 in Petersham, New South Wales.^[1] Their daughter was Margaret Jean McDowell (1918–1978).

Hugh died in 1949 in Kogarah, New South Wales, Australia, aged 71 and was buried in Woronora Memorial Park, Sutherland, Sutherland Shire, New South Wales, Australia.^[2].^[3]
