2nd Lieutenant John McDonough was Killed in Action on a mission to Wiener Neustadt during World War II.

John was born 3 May 1920 in Globe, Arizona. He was the son of Bertram J. McDonough and Particia Maldonado [1]

John was the bombardier on the B-24 Liberator bomber, Jerk’s Natural, #41-23711 on the 1 August 1943 mission to the Oil Fields and Refineries at Ploesti, Rumania named Operation Tidal Wave. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the mission.

On 1 October 1943 he was killed in action when Jerk’s Natural on a mission to Wiener Neustadt, Austria. The bomber was not able to keep up with the formation as they flew to the target and dropped out. He was attacked by enemy fighter planes which shot down the bomber over Yugoslavia. William Sykes, navigator was the only crew member that survived. William and the other 8 crew members perished when the bomber crashed.
