Biography

Matthew Henry or Henry Matthew McCullough had all his children with his1st wife, Mary/Polly who died in TX in 1855. Henry with his second wife, Sophie Josephine Phillips Saunders/Sanders and some of his children travelled west to CA with her family, the Byrds and Saunders/Sanders. It appears the McCulloughs, Saunders and Byrds may have known each other back in Alabama and/or TN. Scott (Winfield Scott) McCullough, age 26, and Mary McCullough are incorrectly enumerated incorrectly as McCullough on the June 25, 1860 census of Visalia, Tulare Co., CA. Their correct surname is Saunders/Sanders. Henry McCullough already had a daughter named Mary A. McCullough, b. abt 1828 who m. Madison Walker 09 Jul 1851 in Collin Co., TX. Madison Saunders, age 14, on this 1860 census may have been enumerated with an incorrect surname; could he be Madison Walker, a son of Mary Ann's husband Madison by a previous marriage? No trace of Madison and Mary Ann Walker in the censuses 1860 and onward. Have not been able to trace a Madison Saunders/Sanders or McCullough after 1860....Madison was possibly a middle name. Sophia's youngest child in the 1850 was a female M. Saunders, age 6; probably enumerated as Mary McCullough, 14 b. AR in the 1860 census.

from Glenda McCullough Robt. McC., et. al., left Texas in feb-march '58 but Henry and Sophia didn't go until later because Henry and his brother (or a son, I forget) give powers of attorney to William Sachse (widowed husband of Elizabeth McC. Straily) to handle their affairs in their absence from the state, i.e., they were off to CA in late 1858. One of Wm. Sachse's early bios says that his first wife died in 1852 (probably in childbirth?) and that he then married Martha Frost, a Collin Co. woman. However, I'm confused because years later an Eliz. Straily gets a land patent. I will have to find those records and discuss this more in detail with you. all is from memory now. comm from Glenda Kent
