Mary was born about 1817.

She married John Cochrane in Alva parish on 6 August 1844.^[1]

In 1851, the couple and their four children were living in Alva, and John was working as a wool spinner.^[2]

In 1861, Mary and John appear on the census along with his 80-year-old father James and their oldest seven children.^[3]

In 1871, John and Mary and their seven children still shared a home in Alva.^[4]

In 1881, John (62) and Mary (61) were living with their children Elizabeth (28) and Mary (21).^[5] Their sons John and James no longer appear on the census in Alva, but son William lived in Alva with his wife and children, ^[6] and daughters Janet (19) and Maggie (14) were living together nearby.^[7]

Mary's date of death is unknown.

Research Notes

It is likely that the Mary Cochrane with mother's maiden name Brown who died in Alva in 1885 is this person.^[11] She does not appear in the 1891 census, and the only other Mary Cochrane who died in the decade between censuses was 57 at time of death which would make her age as recorded on census off by a few years. She could also have moved to a new community with one of her children but there are no other Mary Cochranes in either Clackmannanshire or Stirlingshire who died between 1881 and 1921 of an appropriate age.

If correct about her parentage, Mary was baptised 6 August 1817 in Kirkmaiden and this is the birth date used above.^[12]
