Biography

Milus M. McCrary (1822-1886) Biographical Sketch

Milus was born on the 9th of July, 1822 probably in the County of Iredell, North Carolina[1]. He was the 6th born son of David and Emalah McCrary who, according to the census records, were living in Iredell County in both 1820[2] and 1830[3], so, it is most probable that is where the family was living at the time of Milus’ birth in 1822 and during his early years as a child. His father, David, was originally from Pennsylvania but was living in Iredell County, North Carolina as early as 1810[4].

Milus had nine known siblings according to the last will and testament of his brother, Lee (Thomas Lee) McCrary, who died in 1843[5]. In order of birth, his siblings were:

Mary Lavina McCrary. Mary born 1805, probably in Iredell, North Carolina. She married Reuben Sherrill about 1835 in North Carolina and had three children between about 1835 and 1843, all of whom were born in Catawba County, North Carolina. She apparently went by the name Viney according to census and court records. She died after 1870.
John H. McCrary. John was the first of nine sons born to David and Emalah. He was born about 1807, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was not located in the 1840 census and apparently died sometime in 1843 according to the probate of his estate. John died intestate and his probate administrator was J. R. John who identified all of John’s sibling heirs alive at that time[6].
Samuel M. McCrary. Samuel was born about 1808, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina. It is not known whether or not he married or had children. According to the court processing of his estate, Samuel reported to have died in 1846[7].
William R McCrary. William was born about 1807, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina and died after 1856 since he was mentioned in his brother Julius’ will as living at that time. Whether or not he was married or had children is not known.
Thomas Lee McCrary. Thomas was born about 1810, probably in Iredell, North Carolina and was the first of David and Emalah’s children to die. He apparently went by his middle name, Lee. His death occurred in 1839 at the age of about 29. He was apparently unmarried and left no children. His will identified all of his siblings.
David Franklin McCrary. David was born in 1812, probably in Iredell, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Cowan Lowry 9 May1842 and had two children. David was a successful businessman and banker in Greensboro, Hale County, Alabama where he died 29 July 1888. He is buried in the Greensboro Cemetery.
Margaret Permelia McCrary. Margaret was a second daughter, born in 1816, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina. She married James Houston White about 1840 and had nine children, seven of whom were born in Iredell County and the remaining two in Van Zandt County, Texas after the family moved there about 1855. Margaret died 27 September 1895 in Van Zandt County[8].
Benjamin P. McCrary. Next born, in 1821, was Benjamin who married Lavina Elvira Carmichael 17 January 1843 in Madison County, Alabama. They had five children all of whom were born in Alabama. Lavina was a sister of Ibbie Carmichael who later married Benjamin’s brother Milus M. McCrary. Benjamin died 13 Aug 1888 in Madison County.
James Washington McCrary. James was born in 1823, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina. He married Arianna T. Lawrence in Alabama and it appears they had two children who died young. James died 14 October 1897 in Greensboro, Hale County, Alabama at the age of 74.
Julius A. McCrary. The last born was Julius who was born in 1828, probably in Iredell County, North Carolina. Julius never married and died 2 November 1856 at the age of 28 in Greene County, Alabama.

As with all of his older brothers, Milus M. McCrary could not be located in the 1840 census records. By October, 1850, during the census, Milus was living in District 36 of Madison County, Alabama with his wife Ibbie[9]. He was listed in that census as a farmer. Milus had married Isabella Elizabeth Pomeroy Carmichael (Ibbie, Ibby, Iby) January 15, 1850, in Huntsville, Alabama. Oddly, Ibbie appeared twice in that census, once with Milus in October, and again in the household of her mother, Frances Simmons Carmichael (1790-1850) in November[10].

Milus and Ibbie began their family in Madison County, Alabama and continued living there until the late 1850’s. About 1857-1858, the family moved from Alabama to St. Francis County, Arkansas as indicated by the birth location for the children listed in the 1860 census[11]. Milus M. and Isabella (Ibbie) McCrary had nine known children between the years of 1851 to 1868. The children were:

John Daniel McCrary. The first child, John, was born in 1851 in Madison County, Alabama and died 10 February 1885 in St. Francis County, Arkansas[12]. He married first, Margaret Howe 16 November 1874 in Arkansas[13]. They had two children before her death in about 1878. John then married Rowener J. Whittenton 28 August 1879 in St. Francis County[14]. They had two daughters. The families of John were[15]:

Mary Jane McCrary. Mary Jane was born 6 June 1855 in Alabama and died 26 Mar 1879 at the young age of 23 in St. Francis County, Arkansas[17]. She married George W. Kirby 15 January 1874 in St. Francis County and they had two sons. George later married Mary E. Coburn in 1880 and they had seven children. George was the son of Elisha E. Kirby (1824-1896) and Terressa H. Crook (1831-1916). Mary Jane and George Kirby’s families were the following:

Lelia (Lee) A. McCrary. Lee was born 17 June 1865 in Forrest City, At. Francis County, Arkansas and died 1 January 1936 at the age of 72 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan[24]. She married first William A. Carter 23 January 1878[25] in St. Francis County and they had five children between 1878 and 1883. William died 10 December 1891 in Lonoke, Arkansas and Lee appeared in the 1900 census of Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas as a widow[26]. The 1910 census indicates that Lee had married s man named Weaver sometime between 1900 and 1910 and was again a widow by the time of that census[27]. The 1910 and subsequent censuses of 1920 and 1930 show Lee was living in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan employed as a saleslady in a department store. Lee’s family members were the following:

Lelia A. McCrary + William Allen Carter

He married Victoria Labitha Catherine Kirby 27 January 1887 in Forrest City, St, Francis County[29]. Milus R. and Victoria had twelve children. He died 19 May 1938 in St. Francis County. Victoria Kirby was a sister of George W. Kirby. She preceded Milus in death in 1931. After Victoria’s death, Milus married Laura B. Hill 23 March 1933 in Forrest City[30]. Julius A. McCrary. Julius was the last child of Milus M. and Isabella McCrary, born in 1868 in St. Francis County, Arkansas. He was named for Milus’ youngest brother who had died in 1856. Julius died as an infant at the age two years, 27 August 1870 in Arkansas.

The censuses in which Milus M. McCrary appeared by name are summarized in the following table.

1850(AL) ____ 1860(AL) ____ 1870(AR) ____ 1880(AR) ____
Miles 26 Milas 35 Miles 43 Milus M. 54
Iby 21 Iby 31 Isabella 40 Milus R. 14
John 9 John 16
Frances 6 Mary 14
Mary 5 Franklin 12
Franklin 3 George* 10
George* <1 Lee 8
Amelia 6
Miles 4
Julius A. 2
* The George of the 1860 and 1870 censuses was actually Georgianna McCrary who married William M. Fowlkes in St. Francis County, Arkansas February 1st, 1877.

Although Milus and Isabella apparently arrived in Arkansas around 1860, the first land record that was located for them was in April of 1867 when Milus purchased 169 acres described as the Southwest one-quarter of Section 31, Township 5 North, Range 3 East[31]. This is believed to be the land that became the McCrary farm. The location is just West and South of Forrest City in St. Francis County as depicted in the figure. Part, or all of this property was later given to Milus’ eldest son John D. McCrary in August of 1875[32].

After the death of Ibbie in 1875, Milus married Mrs. M. A. Martin on November 14, 1882 in St. Francis County, Arkansas. Milus wanted to protect the inheritance rights of his children with Isabella and so, to insure that, he registered a nuptial agreement with his new wife M. A. McCrary[33]. She went by her initials M. A. in all the deed record documents as well as the marriage registration. However, I believe this is the Mississippi Martin who was married to Joseph Martin in the 1870 census, and a neighbor to Milus M. McCrary and Isabella[34]. By 1880, Mississippi was still listed as a neighbor of Milus, both of whom had become widowed between the 1870 and 1880 censuses[35]. According to the censuses, she was born in Mississippi. Her maiden name has not been determined at this point.

Milus M. McCrary served in the Civil War in Company F, 1st Arkansas Calvary in the Confederate Army. He is said to have returned from the war on the same faithful horse he had left on four years before. Company F was under the command of Captain Robert C. Nall of St. Francis County, Arkansas and Colonel Archibald S. Dobbins. Among its major engagements were[36]:

• Battle of Helena, Arkansas July 4, 1863
• Battle of Bayou Fourche September 10, 1863
• Battle of Little Rock, Arkansas, September 10, 1863
• Battle of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, October 25, 1863
• Price's Missouri Raid, Arkansas-Missouri-Kansas, September–October, 1864
• Battle of Fort Davidson, Missouri, September 27, 1864

• Battle of Mine Creek, Missouri, October 25, 1864
• Battle of Marmiton River, Missouri, October 25, 1864
• Second Battle of Newtonia, Missouri, October 28, 1864

Milus M. McCrary died on the 8th of January, 1886 at the age of 63 in St. Francis County, Arkansas[37]. His wife of 25 years, Isabella (Ibbie) Elizabeth Pomeroy Carmichael McCrary preceded him in death at the age of 45 on June 24, 1875. Their last known residence was a farm in Madison township, St. Francis County, but their place of burial is unknown at this writing. Family lore suggests that they were buried on the family farm near Forrest City.
