Milus was born on the 9th of July, 1822 probably in the County of Iredell, North Carolina[1]. He was the 6th born son of David and Emalah McCrary who, according to the census records, were living in Iredell County in both 1820[2] and 1830[3], so, it is most probable that is where the family was living at the time of Milus’ birth in 1822 and during his early years as a child. His father, David, was originally from Pennsylvania but was living in Iredell County, North Carolina as early as 1810[4].
Milus had nine known siblings according to the last will and testament of his brother, Lee (Thomas Lee) McCrary, who died in 1843[5]. In order of birth, his siblings were:
As with all of his older brothers, Milus M. McCrary could not be located in the 1840 census records. By October, 1850, during the census, Milus was living in District 36 of Madison County, Alabama with his wife Ibbie[9]. He was listed in that census as a farmer. Milus had married Isabella Elizabeth Pomeroy Carmichael (Ibbie, Ibby, Iby) January 15, 1850, in Huntsville, Alabama. Oddly, Ibbie appeared twice in that census, once with Milus in October, and again in the household of her mother, Frances Simmons Carmichael (1790-1850) in November[10].
Milus and Ibbie began their family in Madison County, Alabama and continued living there until the late 1850’s. About 1857-1858, the family moved from Alabama to St. Francis County, Arkansas as indicated by the birth location for the children listed in the 1860 census[11]. Milus M. and Isabella (Ibbie) McCrary had nine known children between the years of 1851 to 1868. The children were:

Lelia (Lee) A. McCrary. Lee was born 17 June 1865 in Forrest City, At. Francis County, Arkansas and died 1 January 1936 at the age of 72 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan[24]. She married first William A. Carter 23 January 1878[25] in St. Francis County and they had five children between 1878 and 1883. William died 10 December 1891 in Lonoke, Arkansas and Lee appeared in the 1900 census of Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas as a widow[26]. The 1910 census indicates that Lee had married s man named Weaver sometime between 1900 and 1910 and was again a widow by the time of that census[27]. The 1910 and subsequent censuses of 1920 and 1930 show Lee was living in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan employed as a saleslady in a department store. Lee’s family members were the following:

Milus Reuben McCrary. Milus was born 13 August 1865[28] in St. Francis County, Arkansas just four months after the end of the bloody Civil War. He married Victoria Labitha Catherine Kirby 27 January 1887 in Forrest City, St, Francis County[29]. Milus R. and Victoria had twelve children. He died 19 May 1938 in St. Francis County. Victoria Kirby was a sister of George W. Kirby. She preceded Milus in death in 1931. After Victoria’s death, Milus married Laura B. Hill 23 March 1933 in Forrest City[30]. The children of Milus and Victoria were the following:

Julius A. McCrary. Julius was the last child of Milus M. and Isabella McCrary, born in 1868 in St. Francis County, Arkansas. He was named for Milus’ youngest brother who had died in 1856. Julius died as an infant at the age two years, 27 August 1870 in Arkansas.
The censuses in which Milus M. McCrary appeared by name are summarized in the following table.

Although Milus and Isabella apparently arrived in Arkansas around 1860, the first land record that was located for them was in April of 1867 when Milus purchased 169 acres described as the Southwest one-quarter of Section 31, Township 5 North, Range 3 East[31]. This is believed to be the land that became the McCrary farm. The location is just West and South of Forrest City in St. Francis County as depicted in the figure. Part, or all of this property was later given to Milus’ eldest son John D. McCrary in August of 1875[32].

After the death of Ibbie in 1875, Milus married Mrs. M. A. Martin on November 14, 1882 in St. Francis County, Arkansas. Milus wanted to protect the inheritance rights of his children with Isabella and so, to insure that, he registered a nuptial agreement with his new wife M. A. McCrary[33]. She went by her initials M. A. in all the deed record documents as well as the marriage registration. However, I believe this is the Mississippi Martin who was married to Joseph Martin in the 1870 census, and a neighbor to Milus M. McCrary and Isabella[34]. By 1880, Mississippi was still listed as a neighbor of Milus, both of whom had become widowed between the 1870 and 1880 censuses[35]. According to the censuses, she was born in Mississippi. Her maiden name has not been determined at this point.
Milus M. McCrary served in the Civil War in Company F, 1st Arkansas Calvary in the Confederate Army. He is said to have returned from the war on the same faithful horse he had left on four years before. Company F was under the command of Captain Robert C. Nall of St. Francis County, Arkansas and Colonel Archibald S. Dobbins. Among its major engagements were[36]:
• Battle of Helena, Arkansas July 4, 1863
• Battle of Bayou Fourche September 10, 1863
• Battle of Little Rock, Arkansas, September 10, 1863
• Battle of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, October 25, 1863

Milus M. McCrary died on the 8th of January, 1886 at the age of 63 in St. Francis County, Arkansas[37]. His wife of 25 years, Isabella (Ibbie) Elizabeth Pomeroy Carmichael McCrary preceded him in death at the age of 45 on June 24, 1875. Their last known residence was a farm in Madison township, St. Francis County, but their place of burial is unknown at this writing. Family lore suggests that they were buried on the family farm near Forrest City.
