Biography

Elizabeth (McColloch) Zane lived in Appalachia.

Elizabeth "Bessie" (McColloch) Zane, was born on 30 Oct 1748, in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. Elizabeth was the daughter of John 1726 - 1775, and Sarah (Inskeep) McCulloch 1728 - 1793. She married Col. Ebenezer Zane 1747 - 1811 in 1768, in Ohio County, West Virginia. Elizabeth and Ebenezer had a total of twelve children during the years' of their marriage. She passed away on 17 Jan 1814, in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Ebenezer Zane was a legendary frontiersman. He founded Wheeling, Virginia and established Zane's Trace, the trail that lead settlers into the interior of Southern Ohio. The city of Zanesville, Ohio is named for Ebenezer.

Mrs. Zane was a woman of remarkable character, full of activity and of indomitable energy. Her thrift, management, industry, intelligence and untiring labors were noted characteristics. She was the surgeon of the neighborhood, becoming quite adept in the art of medicine and was called upon to perform difficult and serious operations from time-to-time. She was also a skillful nurse. In 1785, a man named Mills was shot by the Indians while spear fishing at night. Rising in the canoe with his torch to throw the light in the right direction, he received a whole volley of gunfire from a party of Indians on the shore. He was brought to Wheeling and Mrs. Zane extracted seventeen bullets from his body, cutting them out with a razor as nicely as a surgeon with his delicate instruments. Mills was nursed and cared for by her and fully recovered. Mills lived for many years, a monument to the skill and care of "Bessie" (McColloch) Zane. The life she led and the well trained family she left is the highest tribute which can be paid to her character and worth.

Noland 588 - I have a copy of a paper showing early land grants in Ohio Co., WV; Elizabeth is listed on 400 acres in 1786 and adjacent is a Betty Zane ; nearby is Samuel McCollock on 500 acres, dated 1773. This is in the Short Creek area, near where my VanMeter ancestors lived.
