Biography

Jessie was born in 1879 to Donald McCallum and Melvina Tyler in Guide Rock, Nebraska.

From 1897 to 1899, Jessie attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. It is not clear whether she graduated.

In 1903, Jessie was teaching at Lincoln High School, which was in a newly constructed brick building. By 1906, she was back in Guide Rock where she was teaching the Baptist Church Sunday School. In 1908, she moved to Wisner to teach.

In 1910, Jessie entered the chemistry graduate program at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1911, she earned her MA in Chemistry for a thesis titled "Use of diphenylcarbazide and diphenyl-carbazon as an indicator for the iron titration" and her advisor was Benton Dales.

After a year doing agricultural research at the University, Jessie returned to Guide Rock. In 1916, her father passed away and she moved to Red Cloud where she became active in the Business Women's Club. By 1925, she was teaching fourth grade in the Red Cloud elementary school.

In 1932, Jessie and her mother moved to Lincoln.

In 1943, her mother passed away in Lincoln. In 1966, Jessie passed away in Lincoln.

The text books and supplies are attended to by a purchasing committee of which the superintendent is a member. The choice of text books and the making of the course of study are in the hands of the superintendent. The board also acts on the superintendent's recommendation in the election and dismissal of teachers.

The names of the teachers are: A. H. Staley, superintendent; Helen Dorwait, principal; Jessie McCallum, Alice Burley, Roe Fisher, Mary Rocke, Kate Moore, Anna White, Mattie Chesney. The superintendent, and teachers of the high school are graduates of the state university. Nearly all the other teachers have had special normal training. R. W. McCallum and son Kenneth went to Lincoln Wednesday to visit University friends and to join Miss Jessie McCallum who is doing some Laboratory work at the University. Miss McCallum has been fortunate in being able to render the school considerable service. She has been studying the corn stalk disease which has been affecting livestock here, and did considerable experimenting and investigating on her brother’s farm during the winter, with chemicals and apparatus furnished her by the University, and she is now finishing up some of this work. Ralph will also visit at Weeping Water before returning.
