Elizabeth Mayo was born in England by about 1637 (assuming aged 20 at marriage), the daughter of Rev. John Mayo and his first, unknown wife. (See Research Notes for an alternate theory regarding her mother and birthplace.)

She, along with her parents and siblings (Hannah, Samuel, Nathaniel, and John) emigrated to New England in 1638, according to Savage [citation needed] Robert Charles Anderson in his Concise Compendium "The Great Migration Directory" indicates the family's migration was 1640.[1]The name of the ship on which they came is not known. The amount to pay for a family of this size to cross the Atlantic at that time would have been about L30.

They settled in Barnstable where her father, Rev. John Mayo, was the teaching elder and Rev. Joseph Hull was the pastor. There her sister Hannah married Nathaniel Bacon in December 1642. In 1866 most of the family moved to Eastham and her father became that town's religious teaching pastor; her brother Samuel stayed in Barnstable; was a mariner and married William Lumpkin's daughter Thomasine of Yarmouth. Her brother Nathaniel married Hannah Prence; John Mayo, Jr. married Hannah Ricroft.[2]

Elizabeth Mayo married Joseph Howes of Yarmouth by 1657.[3][2][4]

Death

Elizabeth died on March 16, 1701, in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, at the age of 63.

Probate

The will of Elizabeth Howes of Yarmouth, relict of Joseph Howes was dated 7 February 1694/95 and proved on 1 April 1701 in Barnstable. She mentioned her sons, Nathan, Thomas, Amos, Samuel, and Joseph. She implies other children besides those she named. Her inventory was taken on 26 March 1701 in Yarmouth.[5]

Children

  1. Samuel born about 1653, married his first cousin Rebecca Howes
  2. Mary born 1659, married John Hallett
  3. Joseph born 1660, married Mary Vincent and Hannah Snow
  4. John born 1664, married Elizabeth Paddock and Mary Matthews
  5. Nathaniel born 1671, married Esther Ryder
  6. Amos born about 1672, married Susannah Hedge
  7. Elizabeth born about 1675, married Joseph Merrick
  8. Hannah born about 1676, married William Matthews
  9. Thomas born about 1680, married Content Smith

Research Notes

Alternate theory for birth and mother: Jean Mayo-Rodwick has asserted that Elizabeth was the daughter of John Mayo and Thomasine Brike who married in Leiden in 1618, and that Hannah was also born in Leiden. [6] A full discussion of this theory is on her father's profile, see John Mayo: "Wife or Wives?"

Esitmated birth date. This profile originally used probable birth dates and birth order of the Mayo siblings are extrapolated from numerous sources. See the Mayo-Rodwick book cited for details. Elizabeth's birth date has been adjusted based on an average age of 20 at marriage.

Unproven birthplace:That Elizabeth was born in Norfolk, England is undocumented nor did her parents ever live in Norfolk, they were of Northamptonshire.

Arrival Savage and NEHGR place the arrival in the colonies of the Mayo family in 1638, Hotten places it in 1635.

Great Migration Directory: All sources from Anderson's "The Great Migration Directory" on p. 224, name: John Mayo, Oxford, Oxfordshire were reviewed in search for information about his daughter Elizabeth.

I've chosen to work on this profile for the May 2023 Biobuilders Challenge.

Strike the statement above. I understand that Gene Zubrinsky is researching with the intent to update the Mayo profiles, so I'm going to leave this profile as is, for the time being and won't be using it for Biobuilders Challenge unless updates are agreed upon before end of May 2023.

I see there are several sources here that are pot-pourri of several people's opinions, not actual historical sources. So I added PGM maintenance categories to this ancestor of mine. I'll try to get back to this profile, as time permits.
Hello. According to Dr. Jean (May) Mayo-Rodwick and her research published in "Rev. John Mayo and his descendants" (see that profile for access to this publication) Elizabeth m. Joseph Howes circa 1653. She d. 16 Mar 1700/1. See pg. 53 for this record detail and more about Elizabeth & Joseph Howes. :-)
Changed her place of birth to reflect current research. She nor her parents ever lived in Norfolk. Father lived Northamptonshire (and Oxford) prior to going to Netherlands where me married Tamisen 1618. Children are believed all born Netherlands, Elizabeth may never have been in England before emigrating to the colony. Removed the Norfolk categorization.
