Sir Humphrey May was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1605 and 1629. He was the son of Richard May, merchant taylor, of Watling Street, London, and Rawmere, Sussex, and Marie Hillersdon, his wife.
May married twice. He married firstly by 23 May 1611 Jane Uvedale, sister of Sir William Uvedale, of Wickham, Hampshire and she died giving birth to his heir James of Coldrey on May 1615. His second marriage on 3 February 1616, at Bury St. Edmunds, was to Judith Pooley, daughter of Sir William Pooley (Poley) of Boxted, Suffolk, by whom he had 7 daughters and six sons.
His Inquisition Post Mortem (as "Maye") was held at Basingstoke on 22 September 1630 and named James, age 15, son of his first wife, as heir. [1]
After his death, the wardship of May's 15 year old heir James was purchased by the brother of his 1st wife, Sir William Uvedale.
