Biography

John Frederick Denison Maurice (known as "F. D. Maurice") was an English theologian and one of the founders of Christian socialism.

He was born in 1805 in Suffolk, England (United Kingdom). He studied at the University of Cambridge, England, and obtained a first-class degree in civil law in 1827.

He entered Exeter College in the University of Oxford, England, in 1830 to prepare for ordination as an Anglican priest. He had been brought up as a Unitarian but was baptized in the Church of England in 1831. He was ordained a deacon in 1834.

He served as a curate in Bubblehall, near Warwick, England, from 1834 to 1836. He was ordained a priest in 1835. From 1836 to 1860, he was chaplain of Guy's Hospital, London, England.

He married Anna Eleanor Stewart Barton in 1837 in Gloucestershire, England. [1]

In 1838, he published The Kingdom of Christ, one of his most significant works. [2]

He became Professor of English Literature and History at King's College, London, England, in 1840, and Professor of Theology in 1846.

His wife Anna died in 1845 in Sussex, England. [3]

F. D. Maurice married Georgina Hare-Naylor in 1849. His sister Jane was married to Georgina's brother.

He was dismissed from his King's College professorships following the publication of his Theological Essays [4] in 1853, because of his supposed unorthodoxy and his political activities. He had become a leader of the Christian socialist movement.

He was a founder (1854) and the first principal of the Working Men's College, Red Lion Square, London.

In 1866, he was elected to the Knightsbridge Professorship (casuistry, moral theology and moral philosophy) at Cambridge University.

He died in 1872 in London, aged 67. [5]
