Biography

Originally from Rock Hill, SC. Virtually all of my ancestral lines have deep American roots going back before the Revolution and in some cases to the mid 1600s in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

I'm also the administrator for the FamilyTree DNA Mat(t)hews/Mat(t)his project which is for all Matthews or Mathis (all spelling variations) descendants. I know a little bit about a lot of different Matthews and Mathis line that originated on the East Coast and a lot about a small number from the Carolinas and Virginia.

Hi

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the US Southern Colonies Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Mary~ Project Coordinator, Membership, US Southern Colonies

Both the NC and SC teams are fine. Jillaine had posted something about a page with links to resources for the colonial period. I have a ton of those from various online sources (mostly original source documents). What ever happened to that? I was going to provide what I had but I can't find the post now and I don't know what the link was.

Hello Greg.

As co-leader of the Southern Colonies Project and Team Leader of the 1700-1776 Managed Profile Team I am looking over two profiles, James Mathews and Isaac Mathews. that you recently submitted to the project for review. I will have a decision for you by tomorrow. A project may co-manage and protect a profile based on the guidance found in WIkiTree help under the following headings: Project Protecting and Merging and Project Managed Profiles.

Questions ? Feel free to contact me Regards, David Douglas

I don't know if it matters but I've exchanged several emails today with Jillaine Smith about this.

Greg

Thanks, I have spoken to Jillaine. She is a project co-leader and team leader of the Pre-1700 managed profile Team. The profile of Isaac Mathews falls under the 1700-1776 team while the profile of James falls into the scope of Pre-1700. To make things less complicated I will review both and communicate my findings to Jillaine. You may want to consider joining the project if you are not already a member.

Yes, I posted in the thread requesting to join.

Greg, I've project protected both James and Isaac Mathews profiles in order to protect merge order and based on the G2G discussion referred to on the James Mathews profile. The protections afforded are limited since these are open profiles (in accordance with WIkiTree policy) but this will give us another set of eyes to watch for changes.

Questions ? Feel free to ask.

Greg, there is no utility to delete profiles in Wiki-Tree. The only way to make a duplicate profile go away is to merge it into the correct profile. Let me know if you need any assistance with Bean-4261 which is a duplicate of your profile Bean-2938. The other profile manager requested the merge initially and it was disapproved.

Hi! Great to see you on here - big fan of the Southern Matthews site and the FTDNA project. Reach out if you ever need any help with Wikitree stuff... the DNA features are pretty cool. (Looks like you've got a solid grasp on creating entries :) )

Copied from your 1790 Census Abstract PDF @ Census/1790.pdf

Surry County

Aaron Matthis 1 6 183
Matthew Matthis 1 4 4 183
James Matthew 1 6 3 183

These 3 are thought to be brothers, Aaron & James have been linked by DNA evidence. Aaron Matthews being my documented ancestor of uncertain origins, and his "brother" James being placed as born in Halifax Cty.

Hi Greg,

Welcome to WikiTree!

Just wanted to drop a note and let you know, my intentions in connecting the 2 James Mat(t)hews profiles as unmerged matches were purely in the spirit of the WikiTree collaborative model. By encouraging collaboration between different researchers even those researching different ancestors with similar names, creates opportunities for information to be shared. It's often the case that when researching a fairly common name, one finds various records that have the correct name, but do not apply to the subject at hand for other reasons. Also, since WikiTree has a necessary push to merge duplicated profiles, it is often of great value to pinpoint reason early on as to why a pair of similar profiles are certainly NOT the same person, to avoid future mistakes.

Anyway, on a completely different, but similar subject. You mentioned connecting to Mathews descendants through DNA. Have you had your DNA tested? If so you may want to take a look at my brick-wall ancestor and his brother James Matthews b. ca. 1732 in Halifax Cty., NC. There are a number of us with Y-DNA and AU-DNA tests attached, and we actually connected James and Aaron as brothers based on DNA evidence.

Once again, welcome! I look forward to future collaboration on the Mathews/Matthews/Matthis lines of colonial VA, NC, & SC. And I appreciate your valuable contribution to the World-Wide-Tree and the Mathews line specifically!

Let me know if you have any questions as you're getting settled into the world of WikiTree. There's a lot to this place, and consequently a considerable learning curve when getting started. I'm happy to help in any way I can!
