Biography

1776 Project
Samuel Matthews was a United Empire Loyalist in the American Revolution.
Penobscot Association Loyalists _ Just prior to British evacuation of Castine [Bagaduce], Samuel Mathews is at Fort George [Castine] 14 January 1784, trying to receive compensation as a Loyalist, for destruction of his property at Castine [Bagaduce], " ... Americans Burn't his Dwelling house, Barn ..."

On the of 10 June 1784, his family is still living in the District of Passamaquoddy, New Brunswick.

On 13th of July, 1784, Samuel Mathews family of 12 is residing at [Castine] Bagaduce on a 100 acre lot. Return of Men, Women and Children of the Penobscot Loyalists settled in the district of Passamaquoddy

Deer Isle ... William Swain was the first settler upon the lot of land adjoining that of Captain Gray on the southeast, on the southwest side of the island. He was a native of Scotland, and came with the British army to Bagaduce in 1779. He was a master-mariner, and in former years a man of enterprise. He was at one time worth considerable property.
