Joseph was born Joseph Matte in Portneuf, Quebec in 1845,[1] the descendant of a couple who arrived separately in Quebec from France in the 1660's, she as a Fille du Roi. He started calling himself Joseph Matthews upon immigrating to the US in 1868 shortly after his father's death.
He married Catherine Loftus in 1874 in New York City. [2] They had eight children together, only five who survived to adulthood. They moved to Hoboken, NJ in the early 1880's, where he remained until his death in 1920. [3]
