Biography
Galeran Martin was a French man who arrived in New France around 1634 as a widower, possibly with a daughter named Anne. Whether he was really the father of Anne Martin is uncertain.[1]
His parents and origins are unknown.
L'an de grâce 1662 le 27e jour d'octobre a esté enterré dans le cimetière de Québecq Galrand Martin aagé de 84 ans décédé en sa maison à Beauport le mesme jour, ayant reçu les sacrements de l'Eglise[2] (27 October 1662, in Québec cemetery, burial of Galrand Martin, aged 84, died in his house in Beauport the same day, having received the church sacraments)[3]
Research notes
Selon Marcel Trudel[4], cité par Réjean Binet, "La première Anne Martin, épouse de Jean Côté, serait peut-être la fille d’un certain Galeran Martin, un veuf qui serait arrivé à Québec en 1635"[1].
Réjean Binet situe "plutôt l’arrivée de Galeran Martin avec sa fille en 1634"[1]. (Link is incorrect/stale)
Selon Denise Gravel[5], citée par Réjean Binet, "Toutefois, . . . [Denise Gravel] est loin d’être sûre que ce Galeran Martin soit bien le père d’Anne"[1].
Selon un article paru dans le journal Le Soleil de Québec en 2003 à propos de Jean Côté, il est père d'Anne Martin, citant Marcel Trudel et Michel Langlois[6] Marcel Trudel est encore cité dans un article de La Presse de Montréal du 3 decembre 1994 qui le nomme comme père d'Anne Martin.[7]
Un examen des listes d'actes notariaux disponibles pour la période ne révèle aucun acte au nom de Galeran Martin. L'index consulté est incomplet, c'est connu. Soit perte de documents, soit actes d'un notaire non indexé. //An examination of the list of notarial acts available for the period reveals no notarial act in the name of Galeran Martin. The index consulted is incomplete, this is known. Either loss of documents, or those of a notary not indexed.[8]
Un examen des actes religieux de l'époque ne montre qu'un seul acte comportant le nom Galeran/Galrand Martin, sa sépulture. À noter que s'il avait été père d'Anne Martin, on aurait pu s'attendre à le trouver parrain d'au moins un des enfants d'Anne. Il n'en est rien.//An examination of religious acts of the era shows a single act bearing the name Galeran/Galrand Martin, his funeral. It is noteworthy that if he had been the father of Anne Martin, one could have expected to find him as godfather of one at least of her children. This is not the case.[9]
