Jane Catherine Marsden was born on 7th December 1808 in England whilst her parents, Reverend Samuel Marsden and Elizabeth, were on furlough from their adopted New South Wales. She was their fourth daughter. The family returned to New South Wales in 1810, to a colony now being well-governed by Colonel Lachlan Macquarie following the treasonous military coup by the 'Rum Corps' in January 1808; settling back into life in Parramatta, St John's Church of England (now Anglican Cathedral) and the family property near Penrith.
Jane married English-born Thomas Marsden Esq, a Sydney merchant and partner with Marsden & Flowers, on 7th April 1831 in St John's Church, by her father, Reverend Samuel Marsden. Their official witnesses were her brother Charles, older sister Elizabeth and younger sister Martha. [1] The couple had four children, however, following a 'long and severe illness', Thomas passed away in August 1837 in O'Connell Plains, New South Wales:
Aged 76 years and having been widowed for almost 48 years, Jane passed away on 10th May 1885 in Bathurst, New South Wales.
