Augusta Sophia Marryat was born on 16th February 1829 at Marylebone, London, England. She was the eldest daughter of Charles Marryat and Caroline Short.[1]
Aged just nineteen years, Augusta married Sir Henry Fox Young on 15th April 1948 in Westminster, London. The young lady immediately became entitled as Lady Young.[2] Lady Young accompanied her husband whilst he was Governor of South Australia from 1848 to 1854 and Governor of Tasmania from 1855 to 1861. Despite her youthfulness, she was well accepted by the ladies in both colonies and, by all reports, was an excellent hostess and consort. The key road, rail and (formerly) sea port city of Port Augusta, South Australia, is named in her honour.[3]
The vice-regal couple then returned to London and settled there. Sir Henry passed away in 1870. After 43 years in widowhood, Lady Augusta passed away, aged 84 years, at Christchurch, Hampshire, England in 1913.[4]
