Biography

Names

Her marriage record lists her name as Mary Tarsille Marcotte. Son Edmond's marriage records list her as Theresana Marquette. Son John's christening record says Theresa Marcotte. Daughter Adaline's christening record says Dargele Marcott. Sons William's and Napoleon's christening records spell her name as Thersille Marcotte which is one of the common spellings of her first name. Daughter Millie's (Emilia) christening record says Thresia Market. Daughter Emma's christening record says Teoliel Marquette. Daughter Louisa's christening record says Thursilch. Daughter Josephine's 2nd marriage records says Tracy Marquet. Son Napoleon's marriage record says T. Margot. Daughter Della's marriage record spells it as T. Marguardt. Son Frank's marriage record says Tersa Marges. Frank's obituary names her as Stella Crevier. Daughter Louisa's marriage record says Thersile Margut. Her husband's obituary says Thersie Marcott. Her tombstone says Tarsela. Nosorigines spells her first name Therside and cites her baptismal record. That is a reasonable interpretation of the handwriting on her baptismal record and a close enough spelling to her marriage record to be a difference of opinion in reading old handwriting. Tharsile was a recognized femine French name of the time, particularly in France and the Acadiana area of New France. Tersille and Tarsille are both recognized spelling variations for the name. However, it was apparently not recognized in non-French areas of the time and got mangled by those unfamiliar with it and eventually anglicized to Theresa. Matters were not helped by the fact that neither Tarsille nor Charles could read or write according to the 1870 census. Mary Ann Brandt Jensen

Birth and Baptism

Tarsille was born and baptised in the parish of Ste-Famille-du-Cap-Santé at Cap-Sante, Portneuf County, Quebec on the 15 May 1832. Her parents were Francoise Page and Francois-Xavier Marcotte of that parish. [1] [2] [3] A variety of other sources support the validity of this information giving ages that fit an 1832 birth and naming her birthplace as either Quebec or Canada.[4] [5] [6]

Marriage

On 29 March 1852, Tarsille was married to Charles Crevier at Saint Louis Cathedral (now known as Old Cathedral), in Saint Louis, Missouri by the Rector of the Cathedral, A. Simon Paris. Father Paris recorded their marriage certificate with Recorder S. D. Baslow in the Marriage Records of Saint Louis County on 6 May 1852. [7]

Family Life

Charles and Tarsille traveled by boat from St. Louis to St. Joseph, Missouri where they lived until 1854.[8] Their first child, Charles, Jr. was born there in October of 1854.[9] Shortly after that, the Missouri River flooded washing their property away and they moved across the river into Doniphan County, Kansas near the location where the town of Wathena was formed a few years later.[8] By 1860, Charles was a farmer with real estate valued at $1400, and personal property valued at $350.[9] He was a wealthy and important business man in the county despite the fact that neither he nor Tarsille could read or write English. [4]They lived in Doniphan County for 18 years during which time nine more children were born: Edmund, John, William, Adeline, Amelia "Millie", Emma, Louisa, Joseph Napoleon T., and Odelia "Della" Agnes.[8] [9] [4] During that time, the value of their real estate increased to $3000 and their personal property to $850. [4]

About 1872 Charles sold the Doniphan County farm and moved his family to Marshall County about eight miles northwest of Frankfort. He and Tarsille lived there for the remainder of their days. [8] In May 1873, their daughter Rosie was born. Sadly, she only lived for 3 months.[10] On the 9 Sep 1875, tragedy stuck the family again when their daughter Adeline died.[11] But happier times returned for the still growing family. On 15 Aug 1876, Tarsille gave birth to twins Josephine and Frank.[5] [12][13]

Death

Tarsille died of consumption (tuberculosis) at her home near Frankfort in Marshall County, Kansas on 5 Jan 1887.[6] [3] She was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, the Catholic Cemetery in Frankfort in Marshall County, Kansas on 7 Jan 1887. [6] [3]

Research Notes

1. In the 1860 census, the household listed immediately after Charles and Theresa is listed as Franne Marcot, female, age 54, born in Canada and Louis Marcot, male, age 40, born in Canada, farm laborer. These are undoubtedly relatives of Tarsille. See "United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https:/familysearch.org/ark:/619031:1:M66W-V1R : 30 December 2015), Louis Marcot in entry for Franne Marcot, 1860. Waterworth says that this Franne is Tarsille's mother but does not cite any source for that parent child link other than generic Ancestry trees and does not list Louis Marcot as a relative. This lead needs more research. Research Update: "Généalogie du Québec et d'Amérique française," database, NosOrigines, entry for Therside Marotte, record id: 1123168 (http://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/Genealogie_Canada_Children.aspx?genealogy=Therside&pid=1123168: accessed 28 Sep 2016) provides support for Waterworth citing the Baptismal Registers of the Church at Cap-Sante although the birthdate given for Therside's father is a closer fit to the data in the Census than the birthdate given for her mother. Once I found Therside's baptismal record, it is clear that the Louis Marcot listed in the census is not Therside's father. Her father was Francois Xavier Marcotte. Louis could be Therside's older brother. Further research needs to be done to see if birth records can be found for Therside's siblings and also for this Louis Marcot born about 1820.

2. There is an issue regarding the total number of children born to Charles and Tarsille that needs more research. His obituary says that 4 daughters predeceased him. Three of them are Rosie, Adeline and Emma. Either their is an error in the obituary or there is another daughter who was born and died between censuses or after the 1880 census.

According to the 1870 census, Charles and Tresseelia Crevia had a daughter Melia, age 10; another daughter Emma, age 8; and another daughter Louisa, age 6. The 1880 census says they had a daughter named Amelia age 17 or possibly 19, another named Emma, age 16, and Lewiza, age 13. (Note that the difference in age for each of these girls between the two censuses is only about 8 years when it should have been 10, but that is what the censuses say.) There is no 1890 census. By 1900, the girls are no longer in their parents' household.

On 21 Nov 1860, Charles and Tarsille's daughter Emilia, reported born 6 Nov 1860, was christened at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph, Missouri, the nearest Catholic Church at the time, about 7 miles away on the other side of the Missouri River. On 21 Apr 1862, their daughter Emma was christened at St. Joseph's in St. Joseph, Missouri. On 1 Nov 1863, their daughter Louisa was also christened at St. Joseph's in St. Joseph, Missouri. Christening records of some, but not all, of their other children have also been found at St. Joseph's.

According to the memory of Crevier family elders in the late 1980's and 1990's, Charles and Tarsille had a daughter Millie who married Louis Howell and a daughter Louisa who married a Meugnoit. The censuses and the gravestones support that memory. Charles and Tarsille are buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Frankfort, Marshall County, Kansas where many of the Creviers are buried. With the Crevier graves, there is a double headstone for their daughters Rosie and Adeline who died in 1873 and 1875. There is also an old sunken headstone apparently of similar stone and age but different style engraving and lettering that reads "Emma, daut. of ..." The first couple of letters of the next line while not complete, appeared to be "Ch" when I visited the graveyard in 1991. No dates are visible on this stone. Millie and her husband Louis R. Howell are buried nearby. Millie's stone reads "Oct 3, 1863 - Jun 16, 1946." Her husband died in 1929. However, the current gravestone appears to be much newer than 1929 or even 1946. Louisa Meugnoit's grave is also nearby and reads Oct 15, 1864-Nov 21, 1947.

Tarsille's obituary says only that she left several children to mourn her. Louisa's and Millie's obituaries list only the sisters who survived them, Della and Josephine. Tarsille's husband Charles' 1894 obituary says he is preceded in death by four daughters. Three who died before 1894 were Adaline (died 1875), Emma and Rosie (died 1873). Four other daughters were still alive then - Millie (died 1946); Louisa (died 1947); Odelia - Della (died 1962); and Josephine (died 1954). These four with his six sons Charles, Edmond, John, William, Napoleon, and Frank make the 10 living children at his death.

This indicates there may have been another daughter who died before 1894. There is a gap of more than five years between Louisa's birth in 1863 and her brother Napoleon's birth in 1871. Could another daughter have been born in that gap and died before the 1880 census. If so, who is she?

Following the clues on to later censuses, Millie's age is listed at 39, and her birth date as Jan 1861 in the 1900 census which conflicts with the 3 Oct 1863 date on her gravemarker. But by 1910, Millie has only aged 6 years to age 45 while both her husband and daughter aged the appropriate 10 years. This moves her birth from 1861 to about 1864/1865. In 1920, she is listed as 56, in 1930 as age 66 and in 1940 as age 77, all putting her birth around 1863/1864.

From this evidence, I conclude that Emilia, Melia, Amelia, and Millie are all the same person and that she was born on 6 Nov 1860 and was christened on 21 Nov 1860. Somewhere in the early 1900's in her 40's, Millie shaved a few years off her reported age which is not at all unheard of. I'm not sure where the 3 Oct birthday came from, but it might have been Emma's birthday. We have only her christening date from the index at this time. Millie is a common nickname for both Amelia and Emma. Especially given the ages she reported to the census and the fact that her current gravemarker appears much newer than her death date, someone could easily have confused Millie's records with Emma's records when researching the date to put on the current gravemarker. Emma likely died sometime between 1880 and 1894. Either Charles' obituary is in error in saying four daughters rather than three preceded him in death or there was another unknown daughter born before 1880 who lived less than 10 years and so never appeared in the census. Further research, particularly in the records of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of St. Joseph, Missouri, St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Wathena, Kansas, and Annunciation Catholic Church of Frankfort, Kansas needs to be done to find the christening records of the remainder of Charles and Tarsille's children and to establish the death dates of those who did not live to adulthood.
