Xth Earl. Does this mean 10th or unknownth? His Wikipedia page indicates he was the 7th known Mormaer/Earl of Mar. Perhaps the Xth should be removed as misleading, ambiguous, or offering no real information -- unless it is desirable to correct it to say 7th?
The use of roman numerals is mandated by the Scotland Project's naming guidelines (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Scotland_-_Name_Field_Guidelines), hence the 'X'. Douglas Richardson (citation given above) names Donald as the tenth earl using this counting: 1) Ivar (Clan Leod of Arran); 2) Cainnech; 3) Emhin; 4) Donald (who fell at the Battle of Clontari in 1014); 5) Ruadri; 6) Morgund; 7) Gilchrist; 8) Duncan; 9) William; and 10) Donald. So in the actual count, Donald (the subject of this profile) is tenth. However, the line of descent was broken in 1014, and there was a rather long interval before the next earl of Mar, Ruadri (who was from a different line of descent). It is also common, when this happens, to begin the numbering sequence all over again.....which would make the subject of this profile the sixth earl of Mar. Sir James Balfour Paul uses this second method of counting. (Paul, James Balfour. The Scots Peerage. Edinburgh: D. Douglas (1904), vol 5, pp. 566-577.) I don't think the Scotland Project has a formal policy on which of these methods is preferred, so this is a good discussion to have. What are both of your thoughts on this? Which would be the best way to handle this going forward?
Donald's wife Helen may more appropriately go by the name of "Helen of North Wales" since I found some information about them in the Complete Peerage of England Scotland Ireland Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Volume I, page 306, which refers to Margaret being the daughter of Donald, Earl of Mar, by Helen, daughter of Llewellan, Prince of North Wales, and sister to the first wife of King Robert Bruce. So LLewellan is her father's given name not his surname.
