Biography

Rachel & James Howe are recorded as the parents of their daughter Mary Howe, b. 08 Feb 1754 in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In April, 1755, Rachel How, widow of Jame How of Worcester, deceased, was allowed administration of her late husband's estate, with Phineas Heywood and Isaac Miller of Shrewsbury, posting bond. [1]

On May 15, 1756, Phineas Heywood was admitted as guardian to: Sarah How, James How, Rachal How, Margaret How, Mansfield How, Abisha How, Abigail How, Abel How and Zurviah How, minor children of James How, late of Worcester, deceased. Phineas Heywood, having received of their mother, widow Rachel How, L28: 5: 4, to be held in trust for the nine children, to be distributed with interest and dividends when the males arrive at age 21 and the females at age 18. The children are noted as: [1]

  • March 30, 1762, James Howe Jr., aged above 18 years, chose Phineas Heywood of Shrewsbury to be his guardian in charge of any part of his father James Howe Sr.'s estate that has accrued and is due to James Jr. [2]
  • June 16, 1763, Mansfield How, aged 15, chose Phineas Heywood of Shrewsbury as his guardian. [3]
  • December 3, 1764, eldest daughter Sarah Taft, and Henry Taft acknowledged receipt of their portion of the L28: 5: 4 from Phineas Heywood. [1]
  • March 16, 1765, Abisha How, minor aged 16, chose Phineas Heywood as his guardian. [4]
  • April 3, 1765, eldest son James How, acknowledged receipt of his portion of the L28: 5: 4. [1]
  • January 6, 1767, Abel How aged 14 years, son of James How, deceased, chose Dea. David Fisk as his guardian. [1]
  • April 8, 1768, Daniel Fisk, guardian to Abel How, acknowledged receipt of Abel's portion of the L28: 5: 4, from Phineas Heywood in March, 1767. [1]

Mrs. Rachel How of Worcester, married second, Jonathan Lovell of Holden on May 18, 1756. [5]

Rachel died at Holden on November 8, 1781, aged 61. [5]

Research notes

Rachel is the daughter of the Jeremiah How who died in Leicester and named her in his will. His probably first wife is Sarah Hutchinson who he married 1719 in Hingham. His second wife Martha prob remarried to Joseph Sargeant.
