Alan James Mansfield was born in 1902 at Gumdale, Queensland, Australia. He was the third and youngest son of Edward Mansfield and Margaret Elizabeth Bird.[1] Sir James Mansfield, twice Solicitor General of Great Britain, was his great-great-grandfather. Mansfield was educated at the Church of England Grammar School in Brisbane, before winning a scholarship to the Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore). He attended university at St Paul's College, University of Sydney.
He married Beryl Susan Pain in 1934 in Queensland.[2]
Mansfield was appointed as a Puisne Judge on the Supreme Court of Queensland on 17th May 1940. He served with distinction in that capacity until he was made a Senior Puisne Judge in 1947; the position of which he maintained until 1956 when he was promoted to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland. In 1958 he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). He served as Chief Justice from 9th February 1956 until his retirement on 21st February 1966.
He was appointed Governor of Queensland in 1966. He served with distinction in this position until 1972.[3]
He passed away in 1980 in Brisbane.[4] The suburb of Mansfield in the city of Brisbane is named after Sir Alan Mansfield.
