Jane Manning was one of the first recorded African-American women to enter Utah. She petitioned to receive a temple endowment in her own right (not as a servant). She was posthumously endowed by proxy in 1979.


Jane was born in 1822. She was the daughter of Isaac Manning and Eliza Mead of New York. Jane passed away in 1908.

In the 1850 census Jane (age 32) was in Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States.[1]

In the 1860 census Jane (age 38) was at 1st Ward Great Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States.[2]

In the 1870 census Jane (age 48) was in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States.[3]

In the 1880 census Jane (age 30), Laundress, was the married head of household in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States. Two granddaughters, Malvina Robinson and Jesse James, were living with her.[4]

In the 1900 census Jane (age 78) was the widowed head of household in Salt Lake City Ward 1, Salt Lake, Utah. Her brother, Isaac, was living with her.[5]

Jane died on 16 April 1908 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.[6] Jane was mentioned on a memorial in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States with a death date of 16 April 1908.[7]
