Pioneer - Australia Royal - To S-Australia 13-2-1849 'Marion'.

Son of Joseph Hillier Manners and Martha Scott, Henry Manners was born 6 May 1816 in Cherhill, Wiltshire, eleven months after the Battle of Waterloo. Henry was baptised in the Parish Church of Cherhill on the 13th of May 1816. As schooling was not compulsory, and indeed well out of reach of the average lower and middle class families, Henry was not taught to read or write. In later years, however, he became a reasonably good artist, as 'he used to sketch what he wanted to know, and his wife Ann, who was well taught, would tell him the correct words'.

Some time after 1822, most probably between 1827 and 1831, Henry's parents left Wiltshire to move south, closer to London. On 19 November 1835 in London, Henry married Ann Allen and they became the parents of one son. After their marriage they lived in Battersea, near Henry's parents.

Living in England was harsh for millions working as labourers in the mines and factories or as domestic servants. They received so small a wage that it was quite inadequate for the family's needs and the result of this together with early industrial revolution was a growing crime wave. As late as 1839 only one third of the men and one half of the women could sign their own name. Because of increasing crime, gaols were overflowing and penalty of transportation to the colonies became popular for the transgressor who, through poverty, perhaps stole food only to assuage his hunger.

The State of South Australia had been proclaimed in 1836, twelve years before Henry and Ann Manners decided to emigrate. No convicts were brought to South Australia and the English government assisted some of the emigrants with partly paid passages. As assisted migrants they left on the Marion.

The voyage commenced 2 October 1848 when the customs cleared the vessel berthed in London Dock. It sailed from London to Deal, then Plymouth, leaving there 9 November 1848 to reach Port Adelaide 13 February 1849. There were 301 passengers with eight births during the voyage but with three of these babies dying. Quarters were cramped with very little privacy.

Henry was thirty-two, Ann forty, and their son Henry twelve years old when they arrived to begin a different way of life in the open spaces of Australia. At first Port Adelaide had been called Port Misery until improvements were executed. Passengers had to be carried ashore, usually on the backs of sailors. Then there was six miles to reach Adelaide. When Henry Manners arrived, some of the improvements had been made.

Within the first three years of their arrival, they settled in the Hermitage in District of Highercome. This area is now called Tea Tree Gully. Henry tried farming but the call of the goldfields drew him from time to time and he would visit the fields at Echunga Diggings. Apparently he would take his son with him as on these goldfields Henry Jr. met his future wife, Louisa Golding. Henry failed to strike it rich and at the age of fifty-five was dragged by a horse and cart. He died at the Adelaide Hospital on 22 March 1897, the cause of death stated as 'vulnus contusion'.

By 1870 his widow had become paralysed and her son, Henry, and daughter-in-law, Louisa, moved in with her to look after her until she died 7 May 1872 at the age of sixty-four.
