Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
Mary (Man) Doodson was born in Lymm, Cheshire, England.
Mary (Man) Doodson is one of twins.

Mary was born to James and Mary (Charnock) on the 11 May 1752 and was baptised the following day at St Mary's church, Lymm.[1] She married Peter Doodson at the same church on 5 August 1788.[2]

"Mary Doodson (nee Man) (was from Lymm, she was a twin (to Esther). Also the first children Mary and Peter Doodson had were also twins Rachel and Ellen born in 1789. I think they were named after their respective Mothers: Peter's was called Rachel Doodson (nee Swift) and Mary's was called Ellen Man (nee Charnock)."[3]

The couple lived in Thelwall and had 8 known children including Mary. They lived on land belonging to Henry Pickering and Land Tax Assessments show that Mary continued to pay rent to him after the death of her husband in 1820.[4][5]

Mary died in 1840 and was laid to rest with her husband in Thelwall on 8 November 1840.[6][7]

Burial Notes

The grave is to the south of the church in All Saints' Churchyard. The plot with the memorial stone is numbered 27 on the old burial plan[8] and T73A in the Monumental Inscriptions book.[9] It is situated to the south of the church.
Both plots 27 and 28 are assigned to Isaac Ashcroft on the old burial plan index.
Plot 27 appears to be a double plot. (See image below.)
Plot 28 is at the opposite end of the next row and the only marker near this plot is for Elizabeth Ellen Ravenscroft who died aged 4 and has no obvious connection to the family.
Plot no. 137 is allocated to Peter Doodson. The plot is shown adjoining the north east corner of the church and has no marker. Peter, his wife Mary and daughter Mary Ashcroft, were buried before the northern extension was added to the church and it is possible that they are buried in this plot, no longer with a marker but have been remembered on the gravestone on plot 27.
Family member Mary Ashcroft has no grave marker. There is no evidence that she ever lived in Thelwall and so it seems likely she is buried in the family plot since there was still room for her in that grave.
