Biography

He took the side of the rebel, Thomas de Lancaster, then escaped overseas. He became part of the party of the next big rebel, Roger de Mortimer. When Edward III took control of England, this history was not in his favour and he was condemned to death, escaped again to Europe, and was later reconciled with the king there.

A very informative essay, used to help compile this profile on John and his marriage to Agnes Bereford by J. S. Bothwell, is in the book Fourteenth Century England. It is based upon the rebel, thrice married, Agnes — including the reasons for John's exile from England, and their combined holdings. (amb)

Research Notes

The profile for Elizabeth Maltravers (Maltravers-40, born 1337) was detached as daughter of John and his first wife Millicent de Berkeley. They married in 1313 and had one child: John. Millicent was living in 1322; John married (2) "before 26 Feb. 1330/31" Agnes de Bereford (they had no children together).[7]

The duplication reported here 2+ years ago is still unresolved. 5 and 39...

This should either be resolved with a merge OR the two profiles should be differentiated and the apparent redundancy explained in their bios?

Update: I tried to propose the merge tonight and get a weird error saying 39 can't be merged into 5 because it's already been merged into something. And yet, there it is. Taunting us? Anybody know how to fix?

Cheers

p.s. Can we standardize on Maltravers OR Mautravers as the LNAB, and for the folks who have some reason to need the alternative, give it as the secondary not an inconsistent primary family name?

On pages 357-358 of the book, “The Plantagenets, The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England,” by Dan Jones, Sir John Maltravers, steward of the royal household was responsible for Edward II’s safety. He and two others (William Ogle and Sir Thomas Gurney), were probably responsible for Edward II’s murder. It says that most likely they were acting on Roger Mortimer’s orders, but there is no absolute proof they murdered the king.
