Berks. A messuage and 300 acres land in Bynfeld, worth 8 marks, held of the king in chief.
The earlier history of Malthouse/Malthus family in Binfeld is uncertain, but there was a William Malthous there at about the estimated time of John's birth.
In Common Pleas, Hilary term 1465, [2] Richard Westbroke, draper, sued William Malthous, of Benfeld, Berks, gentleman, for a debt of 4 pounds.
In the Fine Rolls [3] in 1463, William Malthous of Benfeld was commissioned to collect tax in Berkshire.
Still earlier, there was a William Malthous who was a yeoman usher in the king's household. These are in Patent Rolls:
Sept 1, 1413. [4] Westminster, Grant for life to the king's servant William Malthous, one of the yeoman of the hall of the household, of the office of collector of the king's rents of Wyndesore, with all fees, wages and other profits.
June 26, 1414. [5] Westminster. Grant for life to the king's servant William Malthous, one of the yeoman ushers of the king's hall, of a cottage called Hossard in the town and lordship of Watlyngton, Oxford, to the value of 7 marks yearly.
However, it is not clear how, or if, this William Malthous is connected to the Malthous family in Binfield.
