Biography

Called Katie in most records, she was the fifth child of Polish-born immigrants John Malaske and Barbara Ostrowska and the first child in her family born in America. She was born 15 Sep 1874 in Albion, Orleans, New York.^[1] The Erie Canal was under construction in Albion. Her father may have been a laborer working on the canal.

In the 1875 New York State census, she and her family were in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York where she is listed as 9 months old on the census date. Her father was listed as a day laborer.^[2]

By the 1880 census, the family had moved to Pyeatt, Pulaski, Arkansas, which had a thriving Polish Catholic community.^[3]

On 6 Jun 1885, in the Nebraska State census, the family was in Butler, Platte, Nebraska.^[4]

Katie was 19 when she married Frank Lugert (age 25) on 14 January 1895 at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Perry, Noble County, Oklahoma Territory. The wedding was performed by Reverend Willebron Voogderyon. Witnesses were her brother John Malaske and Theresia Lugert, Frank's sister.^[5][6] The wedding announcement appeared in The Perry Daily Times the same day.^[7]

The beautiful ceremony was performed by Father Wilbro and lasted from 10 to 12 noon. The bride was dressed in white galoria silk elaborately trimmed with point lace, with white veil and orange blossoms. THe bridesmaid, sister of the groom was dressed in pink and wore flowers. Miss Lovetta Mockley and Miss Hattie Friend assistad the bridesmaid. The groom was dressed in the conventional black and wore flowers and white kid gloves. The groomsman was the bride's brother. The wedding march was played as the happy pair passed out of the church and into the new life of wedded bliss."

On 9 Jun 1900, she and Frank were living at 730 D Street in Perry, Noble, Oklahoma Territory with their children Theresa and Frank Jr. Frank ran a saloon. She gave her birth as Sep 1874 to the census taker.^[8]

In the 1910 census, Katie (age 35) and Frank Lugert were in the village of Lugert in Dill Township, Kiowa, Oklahoma, United States.^[9]

She died 19 Mar 1935 at her home in Lugert, Kiowa, Oklahoma.^[12] She is buried in Resurrection Cemetery in Hobart, Kiowa, Oklahoma next to her husband.^[13]

PIONEER WOMAN SUCCUMBS TODAY TO HEART ATTACK

Mrs. Frank M. Lugert, 59-year -old Kiowa county pioneer, succumbed to a heart attack at 5 o'clock this morning at her home in Lugert, after a two-week illness. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday in the Catholic church here, with Father Murray of Mangum officiating in the rites, it was announced today. Mrs. Lugert, wife of the man after whom the town of Lugert was named, had recently been dismissed from a local hospital where she had been taken for medical treatment. She came to Kiowa county in 1901 with her husband and they settled near the place where they now live. They moved to Lugert from Perry. Mrs. Lugert was born in Albany, N. Y. She was well known in this county, and was honored as one of the founders of Lugert. Her life typifies a true pioneer woman. She came to this country when it opened and battled the hardships of early life here, and had a real part in building the village of Lugert and in the development of the county. Surviving her are her husband, three daughters and a son. The daughters are Mrs. H. E. Broughton of Oklahoma City; Mrs. W. P. Lewis of Tulsa, and Mrs. James Jarnagin, Lugert. The son is Frank M. Lugert, Jr., who lives in Los Angeles, Cal. She also has a grandson, Billy Lewis, of Tulsa.
