Margaret Katharine Majer was born on 13 Dec 1898[1] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Carl and Margarethe Majer.[2] Her father had immigrated in 1892 through Baltimore,[3] to Philadelphia. They lived in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.
She shows in the 1920 In Philadelphia as Margaret "Major" age 21, lived in the home of Carl and Margaret Major at 2115 32nd St. in Philadelphia. Two brothers also lived with them. Father Carl was a tapestry designer.[4]
Margaret Majer was a 1921 graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia. After graduation, she became an instructor in Physical Education and the University of Pennsylvania's College for Women. She became the college's coach of women's athletics teams at Penn and is considered the founder of women's athletics there.[5]
Jack Kelly and Margaret Majer were married in 1924 in Philadelphia.[6] In order to marry Jack Kelly, she converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism.[citation needed]
Margaret was the founder of women's athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of the Philadelphia Board of Education in the early 1960's.
She died on 6 Jan 1990[1] at the Linwood Convalescent Center, Linwood, Atlantic, New Jersey, and is buried at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. She was survived by two daughters, Margaret R. Conlan of Philadelphia and Lizanne K. LeVine of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Her husband, John B. Kelly, and two children, John B. Kelly, Jr. and Grace Kelly Grimaldi, predeceased her.[1]
