Biography

Ragnhild mentioned in Harald Hardrådes saga of Snorri Heimskringla and in Morkinskinna , in connection with a settlement between King Harald Hardrada and lendmannssønnen Hakon Ivarsson . King Harald was uncle to Ragnhilds father, Magnus, and Magnus' death was Harald sole king. Harald went hard up against their enemies, and had partly killed the Trøndelag chief Einar Thambarskelfir and his son Eindride Einarsson. Hakon Ivarsson was a relative of Eindride and wanted to avenge kinsman's, probably by killing King Harold or some of his men. King Harald wanted conciliation and Hakon agreed to this on one condition - that he got married to Ragnhild. King Harald told Hakon that he could get Carrie if she agreed to it. Ragnhild said Hakon was not worthy of her, and Snorre ascribe her following remark: "Look, I notice that King Magnus, my father is dead and gone, though I should marry a farmer, even you are a beautiful man and Excellence capable in sports. If Magnus had lived, he would probably not have married me to a man less than a king. Now it is not expected that I would marry a man who has no high dignity. "

Hakon believed that King Harald should make him Earl, so he could be worthy of a princess, but Harald said no, because there already was an earl in the country, Orm Eilifson. Hakon then traveled to Denmark . When he returned to Norway, however, was the Earl Orm died, and Harald did Håkon Jarl, and Carrie was now married with Haakon. It is unclear where they lived. According to Snorre was Hakon from Uplands , while the author of Morkinskinna states that he was from Viken .

From Snorri Sturluson: Magnussons saga: "22. King Sigurd was the feast somewhere in the Uplands, and there was prepared prayed to him. When the king was in the bathroom and it was set oystercatchers over the tub, he thought a fish swam into the tub with him, and when he came in such great laugh that he was clean of itself, and this often came at him eversince. - Ragnhild, daughter of King Magnus Barefoot, married her brothers over to Harald Kesja ( "Spear"). He was son of the Danish king Eirik the good. Their sons were Magnus, Olaf, Knut and Harald. "[1]

Research Notes

Relationships between historical figures could have been simplified or even fabricated in the text to give the impression that succession remained within the same family….Precise chronology is also difficult to assess from the Sagas….The conclusion must be that the tight family network described in the Sagas is unlikely to be correct and that the relationships shown below should be treated with considerable caution.[2]

If she was born in 1101, she would have been 8 when her first child was born.
