William Asley Magarey was appointed the South Australian Football Association's (SAFA) inaugural chairman in 1897.
The following year William instituted a football award to be awarded to the Fairest and Most Brilliant player each season. This award is known as The Magarey Medal and until his death in 1929, William personally presented the award to the winners. This medal is still to this day awarded annually to the Fairest and Most Brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).Born 30 JAN 1868. North Adelaide, SA.
