Melanie was born in 1875 in San Antonio, Texas to William Maclin and Annie McCoy. She was married twice, first to William Mosby. They had three children prior to his passing in 1905. She then married Elijah Pruitt and had several more children. She was musically inclined, and her vocal abilities were enthusiastically received when she performed at Sunday concerts in St. Louis. [1]
Melanie would be honored at many events after her youngest won, Wendell, a Tuskegee airman, came home a local hero in 1944. Sadly, he died in a tragic training accident in 1945. Melanie was then the recipient of many accolades in his honor and she was also granted the Distinguished flying cross posthumously on behalf of her youngest son.
She passed away in 1962.
