Colin Patrick Mackerras was born on 26th August 1939 in Turramurra, New South Wales, Australia. He is the youngest child of Alan Mackerras and Catherine MacLaurin. He is the younger of twin boys; his twin being Malcolm Mackerras, a noted psephologist. He is the youngest brother of the late Sir Charles Mackerras. [1] He was raised Catholic and pursued a Master of Arts (MA) degree at the University of Cambridge. [1]
Colin married Alyce Brazier in 1963 in Woodgreen, Middlesex, England. [2]
In 1964 he went with his wife for the first time to China, where their first son was born. He taught in Beijing until 1966 at the Foreign Language Institute (now Beijing Foreign Studies University), returning regularly throughout his career. Colin was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by the Australian National University in 1970.[1]
Colin is noted as an Australian sinologist and a specialist in Chinese culture. One recent scholar, Liu Siyuan, said that Mackerras' scholarship on theatre in China made him a founder of the field and successor to A C Scott, and praised as "an historian whose extensive scholarship on Chinese theatre forms part of his wide-ranging publications on Chinese and Asian history." Liu went on to say that Colin is "rightly hailed as rivaling some of the most outstanding Chinese and Japanese scholars in the past century."[3]
He was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001 for 'distinguished service to education and international relations'. [4] Colin was a Queensland State finalist for Senior Australian of the Year in 2005. [1]
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2007, for 'service to Asian studies and international relations, particularly in the field of Chinese society, culture and language'. [5] He is Emeritus Professor at Griffith University. [1]
Colin's address, listed on both honour extracts, is Capalaba, Queensland.
