Biography

He is noticed in The Scots Peerage.[1]

He was born in 1775, the son of George Mackay, of Skibo and Anne Sutherland, third daughter of Eric Sutherland, only son of the attainted Lord Duffus.

He succeeded his brother, Eric Mackay as 8th Lord Reay at his death in 1847. Eric had sold the estates during his lifetime and thus only the title remained.

He served for a time in the Gordon Highlanders, but upon the formation of the Sutherland Highlanders in 1800 joined the latter regiment.

He took part in the capture of Cape Town from the Dutch in 1805, and retired with the rank of major in 1817.

He afterwards became Barrack-Master of Malta, and died 18 February 1863.

He married, 8 April 1809, Marion, daughter of Colonel Gall, and widow of David Ross, Calcutta, eldest son of Lord Ankerville, a judge of the Court of Session, and by her, who died 2 July 1865, had issue:

  • George Alexander Mackay, born about 1810 and died 1811.
  • Eric Mackay, born about 1815 and would become ninth Lord Reay.
  • Anne Marion Erskine Mackay, born about 1812 and died, unmarried, 23 June 1852.
  • Sophia Mackay, born about 1818, married, 10 August 1853, to Charles Arthur Aylmer, and died in London, without issue, 24 September 1866. She was re-interred in the Beay vault, within the church of Tongue, 9 September 1867.
  • Mary Mackay, born about 1820, died, unmarried, 18 January 1852.
  • Clara mackay, born 1822, died, unmarried, 17 March 1862.
  • Elizabeth Granville Mackay, born about 1825, died, unmarried, 19 November 1874.
  • Charlotte Mackay, born about 1830, married, in July 1852, to John Drever, of the Indian Medical Service, who died in February 1873. She died 3 February 1902, without issue.
