Biography

James was born in 1804 to Alexander Mackie and Elspet neé Davidson and christened at St Nicolas church, Aberdeen on 25th June 1804. Witnesses were James Mackie and Ralph Gordon.. [1]

He married Ann Charles. They immigrated with their family and a pre-fabricated house to Nelson, New Zealand in 1844 aboard the ship Slains Castle. The family settled in The Glen near Wakapuaka, naming the glen 'Glenduan' and their home 'Drumduan'. [2]

He was a member of Parliament for Nelson, New Zealand from 1853 to 1855. He passed away in 1875.[3][4]

He died at his home in Bronte Street, Nelson on 29 May 1875.[5]

Victoria University writes: Mr. James Mackay , who represented Nelson City in the first Parliament in 1854 and in 1855, was born in Scotland, where he was brought up as a banker, and he was afterwards connected with the firm of Lloyds in London. He came out to Nelson by the ship “Slains Castle,” in January, 1845, and took up land, which he farmed to the time of his death. Mr. Mackay, who represented Lloyds in Nelson, was captain of one of the first volunteer companies in the city, and took a keen interest in local affairs. [6]

He bequeathed a life interest in his estate to his second wife and allocated bequests to all of his children other than his son Robert, who he had previously accounted for.[7] His probate recorded an inventory of his personal estate.[8]

It is mentioned here that he married Ann Hill Charles in 1840 and in Wikipedia it says they married 1831. Their first child was born 1829.

My family records indicate several of the children were born outside of wedlock, and that the marriage finally took place some 3 to 4 years before the migration to New Zealand, so it is likely the marriage was in 1840. The Wikipedia article does not provide any documentary evidence of an earlier marriage.
