Biography

Donald was born on 1 July 1853 at Contin, Ross-shire, Scotland^[1][2]. He was the first son and second child of Donald Mackay and Mary Robertson.

In 1861 he was a scholar aged 7 living with his parents, Donald (a farm overseer aged 50) and Mary (33), sister Elizabeth (9), younger brother John (4) and a female domestic servant at Comrie, Contin, Ross-shire^[3].

In 1871 he aged 17 was still at home with his parents, Donald (a farm manager aged 60) and Mary (43), and his sister Elizabeth (19) at Comrie, Contin, Ross-shire^[4]. Also present were his great uncle Alexander Ross (a single annuitant aged 75) and grandfather John Robertson (a widowed blacksmith employer aged 79), also a female domestic servant.

Donald emigrated to Ontario, Canada. There he, a farm labourer aged 30 and living at Orillia, married Mary Riddle, aged 26 and living at Toronto, on 9 June 1885 at Toronto, York, Ontario^[5].

From Canada he emigrated to Oregon, United States. There Donald died on 24 June 1933 aged 78 at Dayville, Grant, Oregon^[6].
