"MR. JOHN CHARLES MACE. Mr. John Charles Mace, a very well known and respected pioneer settler, passed away on Thursday evening at his residence, 50, East Street, Auckland, at the ripe age of 82 years. Mr. Mace, who was born in England, came to New Zealand some 58 years ago, and settled in Coromandel, where he spent a number of years milling. During the slump he moved to Ruarangi, near Whangarei. and was engaged for some time in storekeeping. Eventually he took up farming in the Paparoa district. He finally settled in Auckland, and for 15 years he acted as caretaker at the East Street Methodist Mission. About 18 months ago he had a seizure, from which he really never recovered, and during the last five months he was confined to his bed. Mr. Mace was a man of an exceedingly kind disposition, and was highly respected by all who knew him. His wife predeceased him some years ago. The funeral took place this afternoon, when the service at the graveside was conducted by Mr. F. Crespin."[3]
