A resident of Palo Alto for over 50 years, she died peacefully on September 16 at Stanford Hospital. "Rosie" was born November 13, 1924, in Cloquet, Minnesota to Ralph and Farrell Macartney. As a child, she moved with her family to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where her father built and managed Weyerhaeuser Timber Company's first West Coast mill. She attended Catlin boarding school in Portland, Oregon and the Katherine Branson School in Marin County, then joined the class of 1946 at Stanford University, where she met and married her husband, Denis. On March 1, 2011, Rose and Denis celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Rose was a quiet spirit, but a woman of many accomplishments. She was an avid horsewoman, tennis player, and skier; was fluent in French, a gourmet cook, a skilled bridge player; a voracious reader, compulsive crossword puzzle solver, and adventurous world traveler. Throughout her life, she showed an unwavering commitment to family, to home, to friendship. She is survived by her husband and her three daughters, sons-in-law; grandchildren and great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen (1948-1958), and her brothers Ralph and Alvin. A private memorial gathering will be held for family and friends. Donations may be made to the Stephen D. Babson Memorial Fund, Stanford University.
