Roderick MacLeod was born about 1816 in Portree, Inverness-shire, Scotland, the son of Catherine Matheson and Donald MacLeod.^{[citation needed]}

He married Catherine Ross on 11 February 1846 in Portree.^{[citation needed]} Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
